Notion debuted a new calendar based on Cron last month, but it will soon be able to provide more privacy-focused options in its productivity suite. The business revealed today that it had purchased Skiff, a platform that provides email, calendar events, documents, and end-to-end encrypted file storage.
Jason Ginsberg and Andrew Milich founded Skiff in 2020. Over the course of two fundraising rounds, the company raised $14.2 million from investors, including Sequoia Capital, former Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang, Eventbrite co-founders Julia and Kevin Hartz, Balaji Srinivasan, and re-Inc founder Jenny Wang.
In an interview with co-founders published on the Notion blog, the company’s COO, Akshay Kothari, stated that Notion had taken note of Skiff’s efforts from the beginning.
“Skiff started showing up on our radar at Notion right from the beginning. I actually tried to reach out in 2020 when you were building your Docs product. We never connected then, but I kept tabs on your progress. Then a few months ago, Ivan [Notion co-foudner] and I were talking, and Skiff came up again. I downloaded all the products y’all had built, and was really impressed by the attention to detail,” Kothari said. While the company began as a safe alternative to Google Docs, it expanded into other productivity options such as calendars and email.
Skiff announced on its website that the company is joining Notion. On a support page, the Skiff stated that the product would be discontinued after six months. It stated that the Skiff user account will not be converted to a Notion account. Furthermore, customers can effortlessly export or migrate their data to different providers.
