With its first-ever crowdfunding campaign, Equinox Studio’s innovative new trading card game, Altered, has shattered records. Almost 15,000 supporters contributed almost $7 million, making it the most-funded TCG campaign on Kickstarter to date.
The new card game is scheduled to launch on August 26, 2024, into a congested market that includes titles like Magic: The Gathering and Disney Lorcana.
“We are overwhelmed by the incredible support and enthusiasm shown by our backers throughout this campaign.
The success of our Kickstarter campaign not only validates our vision for Altered but also inspires us to continue pushing the boundaries of innovation in gaming. We are immensely grateful to each and every backer who has joined us on this journey.”
Régis Bonnesée, founder and CEO of Equinox
During the campaign, backers have shown a clear affinity for game creator Bonnesée’s distinct vision of a contemporary trading card game (Dixit, Mysterium, Seasons).
Bonnesée was previously the founder of Libellud. Games of Altered have a unique back-and-forth mechanism that prioritizes fostering relationships above undermining people’s hit points. In addition, compared to other games with darker themes, the game’s artwork is incredibly colorful and welcoming. However, what has drawn the most attention is its digital component.
There is a QR code on each Altered card, and scanning it links the card’s ownership to the user’s digital account. The game is now accessible to the virtually industrial-scale usage of proxies, since once obtained, further copies of that card can be requested at any moment for a charge.
Equinox is set to launch a virtual real-money worldwide marketplace that will allow users to purchase and sell digital rights to cards, transferring ownership without ever having to exchange actual cards.
