Meizu Technology has decided to exit the smartphone industry. The business, which is owned by the automaker Geely, declared that artificial intelligence (AI) is the way of the future and that it will invest “all in AI”.
A Weibo post claims that the FlymeOS team would be reorganized to focus on developing new AI terminal devices that will make use of widely accessible LLM (long language model) like Open AI.
The foundation of Meizu’s multi-terminal experience was previously established when it unveiled Flyme Auto, an infotainment system that works smoothly with FlymeOS 10 smartphones, like the premium Meizu 20 and Meizu 21 models, and is designed for Geely-made cars, like Lotus and Polestar.
In addition to the first AI-enabled hardware product being introduced later this year, a new mobile operating system designed for the AI era is scheduled to arrive in 2024. Support for existing cellphones will continue, as will availability of physical stores in China. Since the company has been out of the global spotlight for the previous few years, there was no information on support for devices purchased abroad.
